The 5 Love Languages

Picture
One of the clearest pictures of love is Jesus washing the feet of his disciples.  In a culture where people wore sandals and walked on dirt streets, it was customary for the household servant to wash the feet of guests.  Jesus, who had instructed His disciples to love one another, gave them an example of how to express that love when He took a basin and a towel and washed their feet.  In every vocation, those who truly excel have a genuine desire to serve others. -Dr. Gary Chapman

Although Acts of Service is one of the primary love languages, each and every loving action requires sacrifice, which in turn is a form of service to one another.  With more than 30 years of experience as a marriage counselor, Dr. Gary Chapman has noticed a pattern: everyone he had ever counseled had a “love language,” a primary way of expressing and interpreting love.  Of the countless ways we demonstrate love to one another, five key categories, or five love languages - Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch - proved to be universal and comprehensive.

Ever since The Five Love Languages was first published in 1992, the inspirational book has been translated into more than 40 languages and is a perennial New York Times bestseller.  Dr. Chapman has tailored his message for single adults as well.  In addition to discussing the key categories, The 5 Love Languages for Singles also provides advice on strengthening relationships with parents and siblings, boyfriends and girlfriends, friends, children, and co-workers.  It even questions whether a couple's love should lead to marriage.  Most of all, Dr. Chapman believes that life's deepest pain is found in bad relationships, but that life's greatest happiness is found in good relationships.

To discover your primary love language, visit  http://www.5lovelanguages.com/assessments/love/ or check out http://www.5lovelanguages.com/ for more information.  The 5 Love Languages for Singles is especially great for group discussion, and prices for a used copy start at $7 (plus shipping) at www.amazon.com/

The best way to receive love is to give love.  -Dr. Gary Chapman
